Chiangmai Province invited local community leaders to learn about equipment used to measure rainfall, sirens to warn of flooding and general readiness to cope with storms and landslides.
Guidance has been given on the use of these items to help people in areas of high risk, and the equipment was provided to 178 communities.
Lessons on the use of the equipment have been given and leaders encouraged to inform residents of the progress being made. There are 22 high risk Amphur areas plus 2 which are too small to be classed as Amphurs.
Northern weather forecasters expect that during August and September a monsoon will pass over this area and may cause heavy rain. Water from the forests will flow fiercely and sudden floods are possible. It is important that community leaders take care of the readiness and safety of their people.
More measuring devices have been placed in the River Ping and the Water Resource Department has installed an advance warning system in 10 high risk areas. The province has urgently applied for a budget from the Ministry of the Interior to fund systems in the remaining areas.
